Australian Tax Rules

What is a tax file number (TFN)?

Your TFN is a unique number given to you by the Australian Tax Office (ATO). The ATO normally only issue one TFN to you during your lifetime,, even if you change your circumstances such as your name or residency. You should keep your TFN secure at all times and advise the ATO if you change your name or address, so your details can be updated.

Why do I need a TFN?

If you want to work in Australia you will need a Tax File Number (TFN) or you will be taxed at 47 cents in the dollar by your employer.

How do I apply for an AustralianTFN?

You can apply for a tax file number (TFN) online only if you are currently in Australia and you are:

  • a working holidaymaker, or

  • an overseas student whose course of study is six months or longer

When you apply online you do not have to physically provide proof of identity documents. The ATO will compare your personal and travel document details with DIAC-s records. Your details will be validated and you will be given a receipt number.

When will I get my TFN?

The ATO will mail a letter with your TFN to your nominated address within 28 days of receiving your application. If you have not received it within 28 days, phone the ATO on 13 28 61 (8.00am-6.00pm, Mondays to Fridays). If you applied online, you will need your receipt number.
